Over the past years, e-commerce has developed into an important part of the global retail sector. E-retail sales in 2021 were over $5,2 trillion worldwide. This article presents three VC funds from our VC list that are interested in e-commerce startups.
1. Entrée Capital (Israel)
Entrée Capital consist of former founders that are now managing $1,25B in funds. They are located in Tel Aviv, London, and New York. They have supported over 100 startups in divers areas like health, finance, environment, security and e-commerce. A well-known portfolio company is Deliveroo, who deliver restaurant food, takeaway, and groceries.
2. DN Capital (UK)
DN Capital is a VC fund that supports seed, series A and growth-stage startups with up to €20M in capital. Altogether they have $1B in assets under management and have invested in businesses from 16 countries. A current investment is Mister Spex, an online retail business for glasses, sunglasses, and contact lenses.
Update 2023: In December 2022, DN Capital announced a successful eCommerce exit: Bonify, which offered credit scoring solutions, was acquired for a two-digit million amount by Schufa.
3. Sozo Ventures (USA)
Sozo Ventures are based in California and focus on backing technology startups in the US and globally. A portfolio company that is located in the e-commerce sector is ShopShops. They are a live commerce platform that uses livestreams and an interactive shopping marketplace to connect retail stores globally.

Our keyword analysis-based list includes the following general columns:
- Name of the VC fund
- Country of origin
- URL
- E-mail (general)
- Investment focus (if data available)
- Corporate VC (yes/no)
The following columns are based on the keyword crawler, which is a Python-based, in-house developed tool that crawls every page for at least 45 seconds to find the respective keywords.
- total_frequency (e.g.: 792) – total counted occurrences of keywords on the VC website
- average_keyword_rate (e.g. 0.04) – average rate of keyword occurrences per subpage in relation with total number of words
- most_common_keyword (e.g. „ecommerce“) – keyword that was counted the most often on respective VC website
- most_common_keyword_frequency (e.g. 47) – number of times the most common keyword was counted
- sub_url_highest_rate (e.g. https://entreecap.com/companies/) – sub url with the highest number of found keywords
- highest_rate (e.g. 0.04) – highest keyword rate per subpage
- frequency_per_keyword: {‘ecommerce’: 145, ‘onlineshop’: 141, ‘online shop’: 1, ‘online commerce’: 0, ‘webshop’: 0, ‘online shopping’: 0} – dictionary of number of keyword occurrences per keyword

Results of our keyword analysis
In the next paragraph, we are focusing on insights derived from our keyword research, which was based on our list of the 2,500 largest VC investors worldwide.
Percentage of VC funds that invest in the e-commerce sector
Our keyword crawler analyzed more than 2,500 venture capital funds regarding e-commerce investment keywords. We found out that 41.3 % of the global VC funds mention e-commerce technology.
Focus on e-commerce
This bar chart shows the most important keywords from our keyword search, however most companies use the keyword e-commerce to describe their vc company focus. Additionally, the term online shopping and online shop are used, whereas webshop and online commerce not used as frequently.
Countries of e-commerce startup investors
The most common country e-commerce startup investors are located in is the USA. For instance, the previously presented investor Sozo Ventures is located in Redwood City, California. Also, a lot of e-commerce investors are located in Germany, the UK, Israel, and France. As a result, these countries are home to many successful startups and are popular destinations for investors looking to invest in the e-commerce sector.
