Educational technology, or in short edtech, is defined as information and/or communication technology tools that can be used in learning environments to increase engagement and individualize the learning experience. The edtech industry is growing rapidly. This article highlights five venture capital funds that are focused on edtech investments.

1. Antler (Singapore)

Antler is an early-stage venture capital firm located in Singapore, with offices in 25 cities such as Berlin, Stockholm, London, Tokyo, and Sydney. The firm partners with founders across six continents and has invested in more than 600 startups since 2018, to back more than 6.000 by 2030. Antler invests in companies from the edtech sector. An example portfolio company is Aline, which aims to optimize learning with an App. They offer personalized content and actionable knowledge to validate skills and competencies.

2. FJ Labs (USA)

FJ Labs is a New York-based stage-agonistic investment firm focusing on marketplaces and consumer-facing startups. The firm believes in human ingenuity and aim to back that with its resources and know-how. FJ Labs has invested in more than 900 companies to date. A portfolio example firm that FJ Labs invests in is Empowerly. Empower aims to empower students to be successful in college admissions and beyond. 98% of the Empowerlys class of 2022 got into a top 100 U.S. college.

Update 2024: In 2023, the venture capital company invested in AI Clearing, a company that specializes in construction progress monitoring through their cutting-edge SaaS platform, AI Surveyor Engine. This tool uses machine learning to simplify digital field construction progress tracking.

3. Endeit Capital (Germany)

Endeit Capital is a Dutch and German scale-up investor that was founded in 2006. They are specifically interested in startups in the technology sector and buy and build projects in the industry. Their fund currently consists of €303M. This year, Endeit Capital co-led a funding round for Sharpist. Sharpist is a leading digital coaching provider for the personalized development of managers.

4. Owl Ventures (USA)

With over $2B in assets under management, Owl Ventures is the largest VC company in the world that is focused on edtech investments. The company invests across all stages and has a diverse portfolio. A project they have backed is Amira Learning, which has developed an intelligent reading assistant to help people learn to read. Another startup is Kiddom, who help teachers plan, assess, and analyze the learning process of their students.

5. Educapital (France)

Educapital is a Paris-based investment fund that backs European startup companies that have promising potential. The firm has $200m in assets under management. Labster is one of their investment companies that has created virtual labs for universities and high schools. Another portfolio company is Female Invest, a platform for financial education created especially for women.

Our keyword analysis-based list includes the following general columns:

  • Name of the VC fund
  • Country of origin
  • URL
  • E-mail (general)
  • Investment focus (if data available)
  • Corporate VC (yes/no)

The following columns are based on the keyword crawler, which is a Python-based, in-house developed tool that crawls every page for at least 45 seconds to find the respective keywords.

  • total_frequency (e.g.: 805) – total counted occurrences of keywords on the VC website
  • average_keyword_rate (e.g. 0.02) – average rate of keyword occurrences per subpage in relation with total number of words
  • most_common_keyword (e.g. „education“) – keyword that was counted the most often on respective VC website
  • most_common_keyword_frequency (e.g. 783) – number of times the most common keyword was counted
  • sub_url_highest_rate (e.g. https://newmarketsvp.com/portfolio/regent-education/) – sub url with the highest number of found keywords
  • highest_rate (e.g. 0.11) – highest keyword rate per subpage

Our keyword crawler analyzed more than 2,500 venture capital funds regarding edtech investment keywords. We found out that 43.6 % of the global VC funds mention education technology.

Focus on education

This bar chart shows the most important keywords from our keyword search, however most companies use the keyword education to describe their vc company focus. Additionally, the term edtech is used, whereas online learning and learning software are not used as frequently.

Countries of edtech startup investors

The most common country edtech startup investors are located in is the USA. For instance, the previously presented investor Owl Ventures is located in Menlo Park, California. Also, a lot of education technology investors are located in Germany, the UK, Switzerland, and France. As a result, these countries are home to many successful educational startups and are popular destinations for investors looking to invest in the sector.
